My Word for 2024: Lighter

Happy New Year! I hope you’ve had the best first day of 2024.

We got home last night from the bowl game in El Paso. We had the best time and I don’t think I thought of my to-do list until we were in the car on our way home from the airport. But at the top of my list was coming up with what my word is for 2024.

It wasn’t until I was cleaning out my closet this afternoon that it came to me… “lighter.” I want to be lighter in 2024! This is what I mean.

1.     The obvious: I want to get this 53-year-old body in shape. I’m not quite sure what that will look like yet, but it’s very much on my mind. (Stay tuned. I promise to share if I figure anything out.)

2.     Leaning more into my minimalist self: I went through my closet today with a heavy edit and asked with each piece, “Does this go with who I want to be in 2024?” All of the no’s went into my giveaway pile. What I was left with was closet filled with classic, neutral pieces that I love.

3.     #noshoppingjanuary: In the same spirit of less things, I’m challenging myself to a “No Shopping January.” I did this last year after my friend @hostusmostess suggested it and it felt so good. I wonder if I can go longer than just January, but I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it.

4.     Not sweating the small stuff: I’m really trying not to plan too far ahead or worry about things before I need to. With how quickly things can change or how they just sometimes work out the way they are supposed to, it’s wasted energy to agonize about things that are out of my control. I don’t have time for that.

5.     Channeling my inner college girl: Do you remember when you were in college and everything was funny? There were serious times, of course, but there was always something—even in those moments—that could make you laugh. I see this everyday with my kids. And while I have more on my plate than they do, my kids are a good reminder to “lighten up” and not take everything so seriously.

So, here we are. One day into January 2024 and I feel lighter already. Have you picked your word for the new year?

xo,
