Margaret’s Famous Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe


I feel like we all need a little treat today, so I’m ditching my typical dinner recipe for something really special–my mom’s famous chocolate chip cookie recipe!

If you’ve ever lived within a 30-mile radius of my Mom, Margaret Hartman, you know the cookies I’m talking about. Even with 10 of us under foot, she always managed to have at least three bags of dough ready to go in the refrigerator in case a cookie could make your day better (I think she still does!). These cookies do have proven magical powers and it only seems appropriate that on #worldgratitudeday my Mom gave me permission to share her recipe with you!

What You Need

  • 1 stick butter flavored Crisco
  • 2 sticks salted butter (softened)
  • 1 1/2 cups brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 4 tablespoons vanilla
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 box cake flour
  • 24 oz. semi-sweet chocolate chips

What You Do

  1. Mix first 7 ingredients in electric mixer for 10 minutes. (This 10-minute whipping is key!)
  2. Add eggs and mix 10 minutes more.
  3. Add flour and mix until blended. (If the dough seems sticky–could be humidity, large eggs, or butter that was too soft, add 1/2 cup to 1 cup of more flour.)
  4. Mix in chips.
  5. Chill or freeze dough. (My mom says this is the key to the magic.)
  6. Roll dough into golf-sized balls and place on cookie sheet. (I line cookie sheets with foil.)
  7. Bake at 350 until cookies are tan and firm (about 20 minutes, but keep an eye on them).
  8. Enjoy! You can freeze the extra dough for a rainy day. It should keep for 2-3 months.

AMS note: My sisters and I all deviate slightly from my Mom’s recipe. I use 4 sticks of butter instead of Crisco and I think the cookies are just as delicious. But if you want the real deal, use Crisco!

According to Whitney, science shows there are actual health benefits to practicing gratitude. It will help you sleep better, feel better, and experience greater happiness. Simply put, gratitude breeds joy. Here are a few tips she shares for making this happen in your life.

  1. Keep a running gratitude list. Write it all down and review it when you need a boost!
  2. Make it a family and friend affair. Ask your loved ones to share what they’re grateful for at mealtime today!
  3. Tell someone how grateful you are for them. Phone a friend, write a letter, send a text.
  4. Give yourself the kindness and grace you deserve! As women, we can be extra hard on ourselves but being grateful is a mindset you can practice on yourself.

On that note, make some cookies, have some grateful thoughts, and enjoy your Monday!
