BBQ Ribs

We have a birthday in our house today…our sweet Leo is turning 17. Some days I think he should have born in the heart of Texas where everything is bigger–the trucks, the hats, and the barbecue!

For Leo’s birthday dinner, he asked for barbecue ribs with all of the southern fixings: mac ‘n’ cheese, cornbread casserole, and coleslaw. Hardly healthy, but perfect for his birthday and Labor Day! Below is a recipe for our homemade barbecue sauce, as well as the steps we use to cook our fall-off-the-bone ribs.

What You Need

  • 1 cup of ketchup
  • 1 cup of BBQ sauce
  • 1 onion peeled
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • 1/3 cup of honey
  • ¼ cup of dark molasses
  • ¾ cup of packed light brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons of ground mustard
  • 1 teaspoon of garlic powder
  • 2/3 cup of apple cider vinegar
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 tablespoon of Kosher salt

What You Do

Mix all of the ingredients together in a sauce pan, leaving the onion and bay leaf whole in the center of pan. Simmer on low heat for 20 minutes.

For delicious ribs, boil them for 1 hour. Then transfer the ribs to a baking sheet, basting them with some of the water from the boiling pot. Cover in foil. Bake at 350 for one hour. Then, cover ribs with BBQ sauce and transfer to grill where you sear them until they’re perfect.
