When Your Adult Kids Come Home

I often get the question when my kids come home for the holidays if we set any sorts of rules for them while they’re staying at their favorite all-inclusive. The truth is, we don’t. It’s hard to enforce things like curfews after your kids have been off living on their own. But we do have a few guidelines that we like to remind them of that helps keep the peace.

In the morning, the kitchen has to be as I left it the night before. This is probably my biggest trigger. If I go to bed with a clean kitchen and wake up to a dirty one, that’s just an unfun way to start the day. My kids know this and are really good about keeping the kitchen clean!

Work out who gets the car the day before. We’ll have seven drivers and four cars, which should be plenty. But…this is literally the only thing they fight about. Experience has taught me that no one gets stuck without a car, if we all know who is going where the next day.

RSVP to dinner. I hate making dinner for my crew only to find out at the last minute they have other plans. Communication is key and I try to have a headcount before I start cooking.

Not every night is a Friday night. While everyone is on vacation the next couple of weeks, Mom needs here sleep! So if friends are over, we just hope the volume is kept at a good level that allows me to get my beauty sleep!

How about you? How do you keep the peace while your kids are at home?

Enjoy having a full house!

xo,
